RHD2000 LabVIEW Library

The RHD2000 LabVIEW Library links the RHD2000 Evaluation System to National Instruments' powerful LabVIEW software.

The library contains Virtual Instruments (VIs) that enable live control of electrophysiology data acquisition using the RHD2000 USB interface board and associated amplifier boards. The intuitive, graphical programming used in LabVIEW allows for quick and easy development of data acquisition software tailored to specific applications.

Joining the RHD2000 Evaluation System with LabVIEW allows for seamless integration with other laboratory instruments. The Intan LabVIEW library contains easy-to-use virtual instruments for basic data acquisition and configuration VIs when advanced control is needed.  Specialized VIs support electrode impedance measurement, streaming data to files, and other commonly used functions.

The RHD2000 LabVIEW library includes many pre-made examples to serve as tutorials and to jump-start development.

Pre-made examples include:

  • Acquiring, displaying, and streaming electrophysiology data to disk in real time
  • Performing real time analysis on amplifier waveforms: implementing a virtual reference, isolating spikes and LFPs, and counting spikes
  • Implementing episodic recording: automatically saving separate files for multiple trials demarcated by a digital input
  • Controlling multiple RHD2000 USB interface boards from one computer for acquiring more than 256 channels of data.
  • Measuring in situ electrode impedances


System requirements: LabVIEW 2010 or later, 32- or 64-bit, running under Windows. (If you are interested in a different version, please contact us.)

The download, a LabVIEW VI Package Manager file, will install the Intan library and add a new block diagram palette under Instrument I/O -> Instr Drivers -> Intan RHD2000.  We recommend starting from the VI Tree on the Intan RHD2000 palette, opening the VI Tree’s block diagram, and running the examples at the top.  Each example contains extensive documentation in the form of comments, and Context Help is available for all examples and library VIs.

Installation Notes:

If you have not already installed the RHD2000 USB interface board drivers, these should be installed prior to using the LabVIEW library.

As part of the install, several dialog boxes pop up, and they are sometimes blocked by other windows.  For that reason, we recommend that you close all other programs before installing the Intan RHD2000 LabVIEW Library, and that you look for hidden windows if the installer pauses for 30 seconds or more.

The library itself is compatible with LabVIEW 2010 and higher. However, the installer was created with the 2014 version of the VI Package Manager.  You'll need to upgrade your VI Package Manager to 2014 if you get the error message "This package is not compatible with any LabVIEW version on this computer".
