RHS2000 Stim SPI interface cables
RHS2000 Stim SPI interface cables have a self-aligning 16-pin polarized nano connector on each end. The wiring pattern supports daisy-chaining multiple cables in series to span lengths of several meters.

RHS2000 Stim SPI Interface Cables


To support the Intan Stimulation/Recording System, Intan Technologies has developed a standard interface cable and connector scheme to transmit serial digital data and power over distances of several meters using the Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) protocol. These RHS2000 Stim SPI interface cables allow RHS2000-based stim/record headstages to be located some distance from the Stimulation/Recording Controller that controls the chips and streams data to a host computer. The design of this cable is quite simple, and can serve as an example for more sophisticated variations of wired interfaces to RHS2000 chips.

RHS2000 Stim SPI interface cables have the following features:

  • Self-aligning standard Omnetics PZN-16 polarized nano connectors; no guide pins required.
  • Twisted pair wiring inside cable facilitates the use of Low-Voltage Differential Signaling (LVDS) communication for low-noise operation and high signal integrity over long distances with no shielding required.
  • Each 16-conductor cable contains four power wires and six LVDS pairs: one cable can support two RHS2000-series chips with independent command signals.
  • Small connector size: 5.7 mm x 4.3 mm x 2.0 mm
  • Cable design permits daisy-chaining for easy adjustment of cable length.

The cables have a diameter of 3.4 mm and a mass of 11.9 g/m. The cable is coated in a flexible red thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) jacket.

The following Stim SPI cables are available for Intan Technologies:

  • RHS2000 3-ft (0.9 m) Stim SPI cable (Part #M3203)
  • RHS2000 6-ft (1.8 m) Stim SPI cable (Part #M3206)

Multiple cables may be daisy chained to span lengths of several meters.

Intan Technologies also offers an Stim SPI cable adapter board (Part #M4430) that connects to a cable and brings out all its signals to 0.1" pitch solder holes for easy access. This board may be used to interface Stim SPI interface cables with prototype devices. It may also be used to connect Stim SPI signals to a commutator, as described in the RHS2000 Application Note: Adapting Stim SPI Cables to a Commutator.
